Hoi-To had gone down into the egg with some new photographic equipment, hoping to illuminate the area below the egg's transparent floor sufficiently well to be able to photograph it. He surveyed the area around him while his assistants were arranging the floodlights on low tripods. The surface of the walls seemed strangely irregular. He ran the tips of his long sensitive fingers over the surface, and then his fingernails. They caught.

He ordered a floodlight trained on the wall at close range, and improvised a microscope with several of his lenses. The surface of the wall was etched with innumerable ridges. And each of these ridges was a line of Gondawan script. The wall of the egg, completely covered with microscopic symbols, contained the equivalent of a respectable library.

Hoi-To hurriedly made a few photographs of various points on the wall. An hour later they were being viewed on the big screen. Lukos identified fragments of a historical narrative, a scientific treatise, a poem, a dialogue that might have been either part of a play or a philosophical discussion. The wall of the egg was a veritable encyclopedia of Gondawan culture.

One of Hoi-To's photographs contained a number of isolated items that Lukos recognized as mathematical symbols. They surrounded the symbol of Zoran's equation.
